From Learning to Impact: Kennedy’s Microsoft Certification Journey Through Nzeru Hub

For many ICT professionals, keeping pace with rapidly changing technology is essential. However, the cost of professional training and international certification exams can sometimes make it difficult to access these opportunities.

Through the Nzeru Hub, supported by the Inclusive Digital Transformation for Malawi (IDT4M) project, learners can access quality digital skills training and, where eligible, certification examination vouchers—helping make professional development more accessible.

One such learner is Kennedy Kumbulani, an ICT Infrastructure professional at the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), whose recent certification journey demonstrates how investment in digital skills can translate into practical impact in the workplace.

From ICT Infrastructure to Cloud Skills

Kennedy has a background in ICT, with experience spanning database and systems administration, systems support, and ICT infrastructure. His current work focuses particularly on database and systems administration, where he is responsible for ensuring the performance, availability, security and reliability of ICT systems.

He first learned about Nzeru Hub during an ICTAM conference in Mangochi in late 2025.

“I enjoy learning new things and improving my skills. I applied through Nzeru Hub to gain relevant ICT knowledge and certifications that will help me perform better in my current role and handle my responsibilities more effectively.”

Kennedy went on to earn two Microsoft certifications: Azure Data Fundamentals and Azure Fundamentals.

For him, the certifications were closely aligned with his professional responsibilities and provided an opportunity to strengthen his understanding of cloud technologies—an increasingly important area of modern ICT infrastructure.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Kennedy describes his experience with Nzeru Hub as positive, highlighting the range of job-relevant courses available at different levels and the combination of learning materials and practical skills.

But the value of the programme extended beyond simply passing an examination.

Through his learning, Kennedy gained knowledge in areas including cloud computing, security, containerisation and modern approaches to systems and application management.

He has already begun applying this knowledge in his work.

Among the areas he identified are role-based access control, segregation of duties and encryption, which can contribute to stronger approaches to system security.

He also gained an understanding of containerisation and application separation, concepts that can support improvements in system performance, scalability, security and reliability.

His exposure to cloud computing also strengthened his understanding of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS) and how these models can complement, and in some cases provide alternatives to, traditional on-premises infrastructure.

Turning Opportunity into Achievement

Preparing for two professional examinations while working full-time was not without its challenges.

For Kennedy, the biggest challenge was managing his time.

Rather than rushing through the preparation, he developed a study schedule that allowed him to balance his professional responsibilities with his studies. He also chose to take the examinations only when he felt adequately prepared.

This approach paid off.

The certifications not only strengthened his technical knowledge but also increased his confidence in applying new technologies.

“The Microsoft certifications have broadened my understanding of technology and exposed me to areas I was not fully familiar with before. They have strengthened my technical skills and improved my confidence in applying new technologies in my career.”

Making Certification More Accessible

For Kennedy, the support provided through Nzeru Hub and the IDT4M project made an important difference.

Without the programme, he would have needed to identify suitable learning opportunities independently and cover the cost of the certification examinations himself.

Instead, Nzeru Hub provided access to relevant learning resources and examination vouchers, reducing some of the barriers to professional certification.

“It would have been more difficult without the support of Nzeru Hub and the IDT4M project, as I would have had to find suitable courses on my own and pay for the exams myself. Nzeru Hub provided the courses and examination vouchers, making the certification process much easier and more accessible.”

From Individual Skills to Institutional Impact

Kennedy's story illustrates an important dimension of digital transformation: technology investments are ultimately about people.

A certification is not simply a credential added to a profile. The real value comes when the knowledge gained is applied to improve systems, strengthen security, increase efficiency and contribute to better organisational outcomes.

For Kennedy, the next step is to apply his new skills to his work and contribute to building a more robust, secure and reliable ICT infrastructure at MRA.

His advice to other young professionals and students is straightforward: do not be intimidated by professional examinations.

“Professional certifications give you confidence that you have truly understood the course content. They also demonstrate your knowledge and skills to employers, giving them confidence that you have the ability to deliver effectively on the job.”

Building Malawi’s Digital Skills Ecosystem

Stories like Kennedy's demonstrate the potential of initiatives such as Nzeru Hub to support Malawi's growing digital skills ecosystem.

The goal is not simply to increase the number of people who enrol in online courses. It is to help people learn, certify, apply their skills and access new opportunities.

As Nzeru Hub continues to grow, its broader vision is to help create a connected digital learning and empowerment ecosystem—bringing learning opportunities, recognised credentials and pathways to professional development closer to Malawians.

Kennedy's journey is one example of what that investment can make possible.

“I would like to thank the IDT4M project team and Nzeru Hub partners for this important initiative, which empowers professionals by providing them with valuable knowledge and skills. I encourage them to continue with this initiative, as it is helping many people gain important skills and advance their careers.”

Learn. Certify. Apply. Grow.
